Bishop Elect Bambera, of the Scranton Diocese

admin | April 25th, 2010 | No Comments »

Brother and Sister Hibernians of the AOH & LAOH:

A quote from Bishop elect Bambera from his Easter mass at St. Thomas Church of Archbald offers this personal reflection on his belief in the Lord: “Our faith doesn’t somehow miraculously preserve us from pain; our faith doesn’t keep crosses away,” he said. “What our faith does is it gives us hope in the midst of our crosses,” and the following, “Faith is not just a word we can cling to. It’s a reality. It’s a lived experience.”

As Bishop elect Bambera prepares to embark on his journey as Shepard of the Scranton Diocese, I would ask all Hibernians to remember him in their daily prayers. May his tenure be a long one, and his crosses, if any, few in number. CTV will broadcast the evening prayer service today, and EWTN, WNEP & WBRE will of course, broadcast the ordination. How truly blessed we all are to have this native son of Carbondale lead our diocese.

In Friendship, Unity, and true Christian Charity,

Gary Duncan, President

From the Sunday, April 25, 2010 edition of The Scranton Times-Tribune:

Hundreds of religious dignitaries, local Roman Catholics and well-wishers from across the country will gather in St. Peter’s Cathedral on Monday to watch a native son of the Diocese of Scranton assume its highest office.

Bishop-elect Joseph Bambera will become Bishop Bambera during a 2 p.m. ceremony that will draw people from 17 states and Canada, including 23 Catholic bishops, representatives of at least 10 faiths and denominations, the Vatican ambassador to the United States and about 250 friends and family members, including Bishop-elect Bambera’s mother and sister.

The capacity cathedral audience also will feature representatives of local Catholic institutions, including colleges, health care institutions and schools, as well as federal and state elected and judicial officials.

A prelude to the ceremony will be held tonight, when the future bishop will give the homily at an evening prayer service at 5:30 p.m. at the cathedral.

Both events are by invitation only, but the ordination will be broadcast live on the diocese’s Catholic Television station, local stations WNEP and WBRE, the Catholic cable channels EWTN and Boston Catholic TV, and
online at www.thetimes-tribune.com. Local Catholic Television will broadcast the evening prayer service.

Easter Rising Anniversary

admin | April 24th, 2010 | No Comments »

Brothers:

Today (April 24, 2010) marks the anniversary of the Easter Uprising! The proclamation itself is listed below. Even after having read it countless times, it is still a moving document to me. A brief history of the events is posted below. I hope you will take the time to share this with your family. It is how we keep our lineage, our history, and our love of Ireland alive. 26 + 6 = 1.

May our patron, St. Patrick, Our Lady of Knock, and our Lord watch over you all….and as always….

In Friendship, Unity, and true Christian Charity,

Gary Duncan, President
Lackawanna Co. AOH

On 24th April, 1916 the General Post Office was occupied by the heroic freedom fighters of Eire. Pádraig Pearse read the Proclamation of the Republic to a gathering of citizens on that day. .Here is what that document said:

POBLACHT NA H EIREANN
___________________________
THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT OF THE IRISH REPUBLIC TO THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND

IRISHMEN AND IRISHWOMEN:

In the name of God and of the dead generations from which she receives her old tradition of nationhood, Ireland, through us, summons her children to her flag and strikes for her freedom.

Having organized and trained her manhood through her secret revolutionary organization, the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and through her open military organizations, the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army, having patiently perfected her discipline, having resolutely waited for the right moment to reveal itself, she now seizes that moment, and, supported by her exiled children in America and by gallant allies in Europe, but relying in the first on her own strength, she strikes in full confidence of victory.

We declare the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland, and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies, to be sovereign and indefeasible. The long usurpation of that right by a foreign people and government has not extinguished the right, nor can it ever be extinguished except by the destruction of the Irish people.

In every generation the Irish people have asserted their right to national freedom and sovereignty; six times during the last three hundred years they have asserted it to arms. Standing on that fundamental right and
again asserting it in arms in the face of the world, we hereby proclaim the Irish Republic as a Sovereign Independent State, and we pledge our lives and the lives of our comrades-in-arms to the cause of its freedom,
of its welfare, and of its exaltation among the nations.

The Irish Republic is entitled to, and hereby claims, the allegiance of every Irishman and Irishwoman. The Republic guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens, and declares its resolve to pursue the happiness and prosperity of the whole nation and all of its parts, cherishing all of the children of the nation equally and oblivious of the differences carefully fostered by an alien government, which have divided a minority from the majority in the past.

Until our arms have brought the opportune moment for the establishment of a permanent National, representative of the whole people of Ireland and elected by the suffrages of all her men and women, the Provisional Government, hereby constituted, will administer the civil and military affairs of the Republic in trust for the people.

We place the cause of the Irish Republic under the protection of the Most High God. Whose blessing we invoke upon our arms, and we pray that no one who serves that cause will dishonor it by cowardice, in humanity,
or rapine. In this supreme hour the Irish nation must, by its valor and discipline and by the readiness of its children to sacrifice themselves for the common good, prove itself worthy of the august destiny to which it is called.

Signed on Behalf of the Provisional Government.

Thomas J. Clarke,
Sean Mac Diarmada, Thomas MacDonagh,
P. H. Pearse, Eamonn Ceannt,
James Connolly, Joseph Plunkett

Six locations in Dublin were seized & reinforced with armaments by the Irish Volunteers on that day: the Four Courts, Boland’s Mill, St. Stephen’s Green, Jacobs Factory, the South Dublin Union, and of course, the GPO!. Attempts to seize Dublin Castle and Trinity College failed. The inability to seize Trinity College was most unfortunate. This failure restricted the means of mass communication by the Volunteers. Of equal misfortune was the failure of country wise support by Irish Citizenry to render impossible the arrival of English reinforcements. By Wednesday the revolutionaries were outnumbered by 20 to 1. The English secured a cordon about the city and closed in. They concentrated their attack on the GPO while none of the other strongholds came under the same sort of concentrated bombardment.

The Helga, a “gun ship,” arrived in Dublin and field guns were mounted on Trinity College. The effect of the continuous shelling of O’Connell Street virtually destroyed it and the surrounding areas. By Friday the GPO was engulfed in flames and Pearse gave the command to surrender. 450 people were dead; many of who were civilians, with over 2500 wounded. The city was in ruins with the damage estimated at a massive 2 Million
pounds. Over 3,500 people were subsequently arrested countrywide (including DeValera and Collins), although 1,500 were freed after questioning. 1,841 of these were interned without trial in England, and 171 were tried by secret court martial resulting in 170 convictions. 90 were sentenced to death but 75 of these sentences were commuted to life imprisonment. The seven signatories of the proclamation of independence (Pearse, Connolly, Clarke, MacDonagh, MacDermott, Plunkett, and Ceannt) were all executed to the outrage of the Irish public who had now begun to revise their opinion of the insurgents to that of a heroic nature.

Then and now: how names have changed:
* Sackville Street is now O’Connell Street.
* The Imperial Hotel is now part of Clery’s department store, O’Connell Street.
* The Metropole hotel is now Penney’s store in O’Connell Street.
* Hopkins jewellers was until recently a building society at the corner of O’Connell Street and Eden Quay.
* Great Brunswick Street is now Pearse Street.
* The South Dublin Union is now St James’s Hospital.
* Jervis St Hospital is now the Jervis centre in Mary Street.
* Mercer’s Hospital was between Grafton Street and South Great George’s
Street, close to the Stephen’s Green Centre.
* Sir Patrick Dun’s hospital was on Lower Grand Canal Street.
* Boland’s Mill was at Ringsend Road, close to Grand Canal Dock.
* Jacob’s biscuit factory, Bishop Street, was where DIT and the National Archives are now.
* Linenhall barracks were on Constitution hill, near North King Street.
* Richmond barracks were in Inchicore. St Michael’s CBS occupies part of the site.
* Royal Barracks, later known as Collins Barracks, is now part of the National Museum of Ireland.
* The Royal Military Hospital was at Arbour Hill.
* Ship Street Barracks adjoined Dublin Castle.
* Military Headquarters were in Infirmary Road, within the Phoenix Park.
* Wellington Barracks, later Griffith barracks, now houses Griffith College.
* Harcourt Street station was the large building beside the Harcourt Luas stop.
* Westland Row station is now Pearse Station.

Shroud of Turin Replica in Philadelphia

admin | April 24th, 2010 | No Comments »

Brothers,

Here is a rare opportunity to see this replica of the Shroud. If you are in the area or make a special trip it is worth the ride. It is right around the corner from Philadelphia Saint, Saint John Neumann so you can get a two fer. I made two trips so far and I still meditate on it about the suffering of Christ.

The Shroud of Turin Replica will be on display at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral until June 29, 2010.

The Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia has procured a replica of the Shroud of Turin from the Vatican for public display and veneration.

The 14′ x 3′ linen shroud reproduction of the original Shroud has proven to be a great gift for evangelization. Many pilgrims have visited the Cathedral at 830 North Franklin Street in Philadelphia and have been moved to tears by the image of the Crucified Man on the cloth. The symbol of the Shroud has been an instrument of grace and conversion for many who have come looking for healing, faith, and answers. It has also unhardened many a heart and helped people come to belief.

The scientific data of the Shroud has not been about to determine whether the Shroud of Turin is the actual burial cloth of Jesus, but they also have not been able to state that it is not.  According to Russ Breault, a renowned international expert on the Shroud, “the evidence put forth from science, history and scripture, if brought to a court of law, would compel the jury to say it is the burial cloth of Jesus”.  But in the end, the Shroud is still one of the greatest mysteries of our time.

The linen cloth dates back to the time of Jesus and the vicinity of Jerusalem, using the plants/pollens found on it. The blood stains on the cloth are consistent with blood from a wound injury and penetrate the cloth. The image upon the cloth penetrates just two micro-fibers of the thread and are a negative imprint, which when photographed becomes an actual photo of the man of the Shroud; an image which is also in 3-D. There is no evidence of paint, stain, pigment, scorching or chemical residue to explain the presence of the image. All attempts in recent time to duplicate the image, even with all of modern technology have failed. Scientists cannot explain how the image was formed. All of the markings on the Shroud: the scourging of the body, the crown of thorns, nail marks in the feet and wrists, piercing in the side, the unbroken legs; all these are accurate Scriptural details of the crucifixion and death of Jesus. The face of the Crucified Man is one we have become familiar with since the early centuries.  The face of Jesus we know today comes from the Shroud. There is no physical description of Jesus in the Gospels. The face of the Shroud, when overlayed with all images of Jesus from the 5th century are identical matches. So we believe the Shroud Image was the prototype for centuries to come.

We invite you to come and see for yourself! And like Thomas, “place your finger in His side and in the nailmarks..and do not persist in your unbelief but come to believe! ”

The Shroud of Turin Replica will be on display at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral until June 29, 2010.  You can get more information by visiting their website at www.philashroud.org. or by calling 215-922-2917.

The magnificent Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral is located in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia, just a few blocks from St. Peter’s Church, the resting place of St. John Neumann. The Cathedral is open Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00-6:00PM and Saturday from 11:00-5:30PM and Sunday from 8:00AM-3:00PM.  All are welcome and invited.

Irish Reunification

admin | April 17th, 2010 | No Comments »

TO: AOH Pennsylvania State Members
FR: Denny Donnelly, AOH State President
RE: All Ireland Resolution
DA: April 19, 2010

The Pennsylvania State Board PEC Committee is presenting to the Pennsylvania Irish Caucus, which consists of both Senators and Representatives a Resolution that asked the Legislators to present a document that endorses a United Ireland by all “peaceful political means”. This has been the goal, enshrined in the Constitution, of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for more than 175 years.

We would like to initiate on Monday a campaign to have Pennsylvania be the third state, behind New Jersey and Massachusetts to have their legislators pass such a resolution. We would like to pass it through the two bodies in April to commemorate the Easter Rising. AOH National Convention Updates

admin | April 17th, 2010 | No Comments »

Brothers,

I am in Cincinnati and had a very long meeting yesterday, over 10 hrs. Some of the changes you need to know about now are the menu changes. On Friday there will be no Buffet, it will be a served dinner and the choices are Irish Stew and chicken cordon bleu. Saturday banquet will be the veal shank, sirloin strips and salmon. We had so many complaints about the previous menu that they picked we had to change it and this is the best we could do.

Mass on Wednesday will be in the cathederal at 6:30 pm as will the mass on Saturday as they have scheduled a 5 pm wedding on sat. There is a bus parking lot 2 blocks from the hotel. If a member does not take at least one of the nights, ice breaker, Irish Night or banquet they will be charged a $25 fee for the thursday night free night which includes a play, bag pipe competition and other things in the hotel and also to get into the hospitality suite area. This is not the National Board doing this it is the local committee. The Pa hosp room will be open to everyone whether they pay this $25 or not. It is called a local entertainment fee. We were against it but it is theirs and they will police it themselves.

Voting for the men will be from 8 to 12pm on Sat. Friday and sat nights affairs will be free guinness, beer and wine and cash bar for mixed drinks.

A letter will be going out after May 1st for the men for the call to convention with an attached letter with the schedule and all this information and I believe the ladies will be doing the same.

PA United Ireland Resolution

admin | April 17th, 2010 | No Comments »

Here is the entire document for our PA statewide United Ireland Resolution.

TO: PA State Representative Timothy Hennessey
RE: United Ireland Resolution
FR: Ned McGinley, Past National President AOH in America
DA: April 16, 2010

We would like to propose that this Resolution be championed by the Irish Caucus and presented to both the Pennsylvania State House and Senate for their approval. We know that Pennsylvania History is replete with tales of the Irish and Irish American contributions to our history and the PA State legislature should be out front on this extremely important issue.

The AOH in Pennsylvania, the Ladies AOH, and the Irish American Unity Conference are presenting this resolution.

The States of New Jersey and Massachusetts have passed this resolution along with the PA cities of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

We would hope that the House and Senate can move this resolution as quickly as possible.

For more information and if you have any questions please call Ned McGinley (570) 905-5715

Support for Irish Unification

WHEREAS, the logic of history, international law, human rights and peace dictate the reunification of the island of Ireland, and the reality of the moment — in the Peace Process,  the Good Friday Agreement, the Devolved Assembly, and the development of the All-Ireland institutions of governance,  – attest to this momentum; and

WHEREAS, in the past the Pennsylvania State Senate and the State Legislature adopted the MacBride Principles for Northern Ireland and strongly endorsed passage of the Good Friday Agreement among the previously warring parties, in part because of the dedication as well as bi partisan support of President William Jefferson Clinton, President George W. Bush, and President Barack Obama as well as their administrations and representatives Senator George Mitchell, Richard Haas, Mitchell Reis, Paula Dobriansky, and Declan Kelly in seeing the Good Friday Agreement to fruition and formation of the Assembly; and

WHEREAS, the contribution of the Irish-born, and Irish Americans to the United States of America and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are legion in our state;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Pennsylvania State House and Senate strongly supports Irish Reunification and urges both the Governor Edward G. Rendell and the Pennsylvania Congressional delegation to support all peaceful political actions that will result in the final reunification of the island of Ireland [Eire] by all electoral and diplomatic means necessary; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the all members of the Pennsylvania Congressional Delegation, as well as President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden of the United States and the U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.
