Bible in Irish Now Available on the Internet Free of Charge

admin | August 23rd, 2010 | No Comments »

The Bible in Irish, ‘An Bíobla Naofa,’ is now available on the internet.  It can be downloaded to a computer for use with dedicated Bible software, viewed online in pdf format, or even downloaded for viewing on a mobile phone, at www.anbioblanaofa.org.

There are several advantages to viewing ‘An Bíobla Naofa’ with free Bible software, e-Sword.  For example, viewing verses in Irish and English at the same time can be a great aid in learning Irish. Alternatively, having the whole Bible on a mobile phone means that it can be read anywhere, anytime.  Both programs can also be used in the medium of Irish.

With a desire to see the Bible in Irish used more widely, and with the publisher’s (Mons. Pádraig Ó Fiannachta, ‘An Sagart’) similar generosity in allowing it to be free of charge, Colin Glen Christian Fellowship has converted the existing CD-ROM contents into Bible software formats.

“The Bible has been a source of inspiration and faith in Ireland from the era of Celtic Christianity up to the present day.  While it has only been available in print in the Irish language in recent centuries, the release of ‘An Bíobla Naofa’ on the internet is a significant step forward in making God’s Word more widely accessible in the Irish language,” says project leader John Duffy.  Whether it is for Bible reading, or just finding a favorite Bible verse in Irish, visit www.anbioblanaofa.org.

Brothers and sisters please read the history of what is happening to our Medal of Honor Grove at Valley Forge and help us restore it.

I would like to ask anyone who can help us to clean up this Valley Forge Medal of Honor Grove and repair it over the 3 days Friday,
Oct 8th, Sunday October 10th and Monday October 11th. We need dump trucks, bob cats, wood chippers, all kinds of gardening tools, hoes, shovels, rakes, chain saws, weed whackers brooms, plastic bags etc. Mick Dunleavy, President of Westchester AOH Division 1 is spearheading this enormous task and has been up there quite a few times and has enlisted the help of Senator Dinneman who has been a tremendous help. This is our history, America’s and Ireland’s. Our hero’s who gave everything for our country are buried here and the least we can do is is make ir respectable looking. If you know of someone who can donate any of the above materials please ask them and if you have someone in your division who is a landscaper please ask them to help or lend us some equipment. This is not just a local project we want people from everywhere to help whether they are Hibernians or not. Please ask your division to participate and pass this on to your Ladies Divisions and your Junior Divisions. Lets show our love and pride for our fallen hero’s.

If you can be there on any of those days or donate something toward this worthwhile project please contact Mick Dunleavy at 610-696-6779 or mjdunl@aol.com   or contact me at 215-820-1547 or shay39@comcast.net

Freedom Foundation

Many of you have probably been following the news recently on the condition of the Medal of Honor Grove at the Valley Forge Freedom Foundation www.freedomsfoundation.org. Hearing of the news, our AOH National President, Seamus Boyle and Past National President, Joe Roche asked me to take a look at the site and give them a report. Their concern being about the Ancient Order of Hibernian obelisk that was placed there with great ceremony in 1985.

The entire 52 acres of the site is in need of general maintenance. There are a number of dead trees, tree branches and shrubs. Weeds growing between bricks and around all of the obelisks. Pathways need to be resurfaced and buildings painted. There are many individual markers with the name and unit of those service members who have earned the Medal of Honor. These markers (and trees) were donated by family members and service organizations. In a number of areas those trees have died or have dead branches hanging down and the markers have been removed and are lying in a pile.

About the AOH Obelisk: Sister Marie Veronica of the Sister, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary had retired to Camilla Hall after a life time of teaching. Not one to sit around, she made it her life’s ambition to do a military research on all of the men who had earned the Medal of Honor in our nation’s history. It was during this research that she had noticed that a number of the men who earned the medal could not be accredited to any state or territory. Most of these men had been born in Ireland and never had the opportunity to become an American citizen.  Sister Veronica was a very good friend of the late Bob Dougherty. Bob was a very active member (and a charter member) of the Chester County Ancient Order of Hibernians. Bob passed this information on to the National President of the AOH, Joe Roche. Joe formed a committee and through the dedication and hard work of these committee members the idea of an AOH obelisk was brought to fruition. The seven foot obelisk made of Wicklow granite was donated by the Irish government. Engraved on the memorial are the names of those men from Ireland who earned the medal and also the names of those men from Australia, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Norway, Philippines,Scotland, South Wales, Sweden, Switzerland, West Indies and the names of five men with a birthplace unknown.

In 1989 Sister Marie Veronica, received the prestigious Anna C. Malia Award from the Pennsylvania Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, for her historical research.

Mass in Remembrance of the Hunger Strikers

admin | August 9th, 2010 | No Comments »

I am writing to once again about the annual Mass in remembrance of the hunger strikers that will be held this year on Saturday, August 21, at 5pm at old St. Patrick’s Church in the Strip District.  The Irish American Unity Conference has reserved this day and time for the annual Mass and Father Tom O’Donnell has again graciously agreed to celebrate Mass.

This will be the 29th year since the deaths of Bobby Sands, Francie Hughes, and the other men who elected to go on hunger strike and resist criminalizing their efforts to reunite Ireland and remove the British from Irish soil.  For this Mass and in beginning to plan for next year’s Mass, we would like to conduct a brief processional into Church with you or designated members from your respective organizations holding a portrait of each man. We also are asking individuals to participate in liturgical readings and songs.

The plan is to hold a reception after Mass in the courtyard of St. Patrick’s with light refreshments and all organizations are welcome to bring their recruitment and informational brochures.

If you could let me know your availability for Mass and willingness to participate as well as notify members of your respective organizations I would greatly appreciate it.  I am copying LAOH division presidents for Allegheny and Washington County.  I would deeply appreciate the AOH County President’s help in notifying the presidents of the divisions in Allegheny County and in spreading the word to other Irish organizations as this should be as comprehensive as possible.

In solidarity and commitment to Irish unity,
Sarah McAuliffe-Bellin
President, IAUC Pittsburgh/Western PA Chapter

AOH Divisions and Boards Support Omagh Basketball

admin | August 9th, 2010 | No Comments »

Brothers,
My wife & I were very pleased to have the opportunity to spend a few very pleasurable hours in the company of Brother Eamon Daly and his basketball team from Omagh , Co. Tyrone. Eamon is in every sense of the word an exceptional man and an exemplary Brother Hibernian and friend. His program epitomizes what Hibernianism is all about. Eamon and I spoke in Derry when he first embarked on his program and his plans to bring young people together through participation in sports. His tenacity of purpose and dedication to his ideals have proven beyond doubt that he was absolutely right. Politics are politics but winning over the hearts and minds of young people regardless of the religious or political affiliation of their parents is the key to a lasting peace in Ireland.
The mutual respect and friendship for each other that was so evident between Eamon, his assistant coaches, and especially “his boys” was truly heartwarming. God Bless you, Eamon. The young people in your adopted home in Ireland are so fortunate to have a man like you in their corner and the lives of your Brother Hibernians are richer as a result of our friendship which transcends all politics.
Yours in our Motto,
Jack Meehan, Past National President
Ancient Order of Hibernians in America

Eamon Daly is a man, a member of Philadelphia Division 39, who moved back to just outside Omagh, County Tyrone, Ireland several years ago to take over the old family farm that his family had left at the end of World War II but never relinquished. Earlier here in the USA he had been the main proponent of the Jeanie Johnston  Great Hunger Ship tour of the United States, which is still remembered fondly today in so many East coast cities by members of the AOH in America.

In truth Eamon was always one of those down in the ditch workers for the AOH in America and he continued his work in the same way in Tyrone. Several times he has represented the AOH in America, including presenting the latest donation to the Irish Red Cross for the victims of the flooding on the island. He has been present at BOE functions representing the Board of America.

Eamon also decided to begin a basketball program in the schools of the area where basketball was basically unknown and seek participation from both nationalist and unionist traditions. In one of our early visits to Omagh, we watched Eamon negotiate for space in the Omagh Recreation Center, gather basketballs, and T-shirts all for the young men and woman as well as gather monies and equipment from many AOH in America divisions and boards. Soon backboards, with money raised with the AOH, appeared in the gym as they had in Springfield Massachusettsin the 1800′s. Early on we decided not to seek recognition for the AOH so that this could truly be seen as a reconciliation program in Tyrone between the communities.

As a result of all this earlier this summer Eamon brought participants from Omagh Basketball to the USA to not only play against teams in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania but attend clinics as well as see our country in a new light. Money was raised to support travel, room, and board while the team was here in the states through the Hibernian Charity.

This is Eamon’s thank you note to the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the LAOH in America with a comment from Gerry Harkins of the Board of Erin.

As Dick Thompson, Massachusett’s State President and a member of the Omagh Basketball Committee said on a Charity conference call we had last spring, “Sometimes we need to be reminded of all the good things we do”.

Many thanks to Frank Kearney, Hibernian Charity Secretary, for all of his hard work on the Omagh Basketball Tour.

BISHOP BACKS BALLYMURPHY INQUIRY

admin | August 2nd, 2010 | No Comments »

It is time for the London Government to admit the many wrongs of the British Security forces and how these state initiated “war crimes” against people they considered to be their own citizens caused the conflict to be even more violent and legitimitized the Nationalist communities fighting back against these crimes.
It is obvious that the policy of violence against the Nationalist Community was systemic. The British Security Forces were indeed protagonists in the conflict on the Unionist side and far from the peacekeepers keeping the two communities apart, which they claimed to be.

The veil has been lifted from the eyes of the public, when it comes to self assigned peacekeeper status the British forces gave to their troops, by the Saville Enquiry revelations and once the toothpaste is out of the tube it will be impossible to put back.

The release of the previously undisclosed report is further damning evidence that the Ballymurphy Massacre, only six months before Bloody Sunday, triggered greater violence and loss of life over the 30 years of the Struggle. Once the fuse was lit it was impossible to stop the explosion.

BISHOP BACKS BALLYMURPHY INQUIRY

A senior Catholic Church has backed calls for a public inquiry into the British army killings of 11 people in west Belfast almost 40 years ago.

The Bishop of Down and Connor, Dr Noel Treanor, stressed the need for lingering sores from the Troubles to be salved as he publicly backed the campaign for an inquiry into the Ballymurphy killings.

Catholic priest Hugh Mullan was among those shot dead by soldiers in the incident in August 1971.

Dr Treanor met and prayed with bereaved relatives this afternoon at the scene of the shootings before presenting them with a previously undisclosed report compiled by the church at the time of the killings.

“It is important in an integrated way as we build a shared future in this society that we courageously and openly have the guts to address the entire ballast of the past, the weight of the past, so we may go forward in a healthy way to construct a shared future,” he said.

The shootings took place over a three-day period after the army entered the nationalist Ballymurphy area to round up suspected paramilitaries after the Northern Ireland government introduced internment without trial.

Relatives’ calls for an internationally chaired independent investigation have intensified since the publication in June of the Saville report into the British army killings of 14 people on Bloody Sunday in Derry in 1972.

Some of the soldiers who were involved in the killings in Derry had been in Ballymurphy six months earlier.

Dr Treanor said he is backing the relatives’ demand for a new investigation into the events and an acknowledgment and apology from the British government.

The bill for the 12-year long Bloody Sunday inquiry was almost £200 million and the bishop stressed that the cost of any similar probe into the Ballymurphy incidents had to be kept under control.

“Inquiries as we have known can cost a lot of money,” he said. “We are in a period of recession – investing money in society, in the future, in employment is very important – but nonetheless it is equally important that the truth of the past be established.”

John Teggart, whose father Danny was one of those killed, welcomed the bishop’s support. “It’s a big step for our campaign and it’s welcome to have the Catholic Church as part of our campaign,” he said.

“The Catholic Church are the same as the other 10 families – they are looking for what happened to Father Mullan, they are seeking the truth just like us and it’s all part of the one campaign.”

CHURCH TO RELEASE EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNTS OF SHOOTINGS

admin | August 2nd, 2010 | No Comments »

Gentlemen, The people of Ballymurphy have long awaited an opportunity to have their case reviewed by an Enquiry. The fact that many of these British Soldiers were in Derry on Bloody Sunday only makes the case stronger.

It is very important that the Catholic Church is releasing many of the documents.

The British Security forces made a system wide effort to suppress the Nationalist population they claimed were British citizens. Derry was not a one off rogue unit, they were indeed part of the policy.

The AOH supports the Ballymurphy Families and the Catholic Church in their efforts to unearth the truth..

CHURCH TO RELEASE EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNTS OF SHOOTINGS

The Catholic Church is to release its archive documents on 11 people killed by the British Army in Belfast almost 39 years ago.

A Catholic priest and a mother-of-eight were among those killed by the Parachute Regiment in Ballymurphy, west Belfast in August 1971.

The troops claimed they opened fire, after being shot at by republicans.

Down and Connor Bishop Noel Treanor said he was supporting calls for an independent international inquiry into the deaths and a British government apology.

Families of those killed made similar calls last month following the release of the Bloody Sunday report into the deaths of 13 people who were killed by Parachute Regiment soldiers in Derry City six months later.

The previously undisclosed documents to be released this afternoon include a report based on eyewitness accounts of the events taken about two weeks after the killings.

The shootings in Ballymurphy happened during the Army’s Operation Demetrius, during which people arrested on suspicion of involvement in paramilitary activity were interned.

According to the Catholic Church, the accounts include “a serving member of the British army, a member of the British Navy who returned to his ship shortly after the shootings and an ex-Irish Guardsman”.

“Those who compiled the report indicate that on the basis of the eyewitness accounts, ‘we are convinced that the British army units involved, whether through fear or vindictiveness, unnecessarily fired a large number of rounds into the waste grounds across which innocent men, women and children were fleeing’.”

In a statement, it said the report found the people killed were not caught in crossfire, and there was “a sufficient weight of evidence to indict the soldiers on the roof of the Springmartin flats”.

Dr Treanor will reveal further details about the church’s documents later today.
